| Term | Definition |
| Shielding | Protects a conductor or other equipment from interference. Often used when describing interconnect cables (RCA Cables). Also used when referring to loudspeakers that are magnetically shielded to prevent interaction with TV screens, when placed in close proximity. |
| Signal-to-noise ratio | The difference (in decibels) between the level of the audio signal and the level of unwanted noise. The larger the number, the lower the noise. See also: Decibel (dB) |
| Sound Wave | Continuous audio frequency signal taking the form of a wavy line similar to waves on the water with frequency determining the length of the waves and amplitude or volume determining the height of the waves. |
| Speaker Cables | Good speaker cables can be 'multistrand' or 'solid core' (usually just one thick conductor). Some cables are directional, and will have an arrow pointing from the source to the amplifier or the amplifier to the loudspeakers. The purity of copper conductors is usually expressed as a number of nines. For example, a purity of 'six nines' or '6N' might be 99.99997% pure copper. Good copper may be described as LC-OFC (linear crystal, oxygen-free copper). |
| Speaker Coloration | Any shift away from the natural rendition of music. Coloration is undesirable--"boomy bass", "nasal" or constricted sounding midband or a 'splashy' treble, for instance. All colorations tend to get in the way of the music. The better the speakers, the less coloration. |
