| Peak Power | Amplifier power in watts available for a short time when needed to reproduce loud, sudden sounds (transients). |
| Power handling | The maximum safe power for speakers. But be aware that it's often easier to damage speakers with an amp of too little power driven hard, than with one of too much power. Amplifiers of low power, overdriven to excessively loud volumes will often produce large amounts of distortion....which in turn damage speakers. |
| Preamplifier | The first stage of amplification that includes controls such as volume, tone and switching between different sources. It may be separate from the power amp, or combined in an integrated amplifier. |
